Findings

  • Fear of losing money is the most commonly reported barrier, among the roughly half of the group who answered this question.

Among those who answered, concern about losing money is the single most common reason given for not currently investing.

  • Several distinct concerns — perceived risk, not knowing how mutual funds work, and not knowing how to start — are reported at similar rates just behind fear of loss.

This isn't one dominant barrier — knowledge gaps and not knowing where to start are reported almost as often as the top concern.

  • Distrust — of fund managers and of mutual funds generally — is a third, distinct barrier theme, reported by about 1 in 5.

Alongside perceived risk and knowledge gaps, a meaningful share separately cite not trusting fund managers or mutual funds as institutions — a different kind of concern from "I don't understand this yet."
